Photo by @amivitale. In 2000, I was awarded a Professional @alexiafoundation Grant to document the lives of the people of Guinea Bissau. The West African country is one of the most impoverished countries on the planet. Most people have no running water, no electricity but despite what you might imagine, there was a lot of joy here. I discovered a place that is rarely reported in mainstream press. It was not the Africa of war and famines, nor was it the idealized world of safaris and exotic animals. Instead it was a look into the simplicity and beauty of how the majority of people on this planet live. The Alexia Professional Grant encouraged me to spend time on the stories that rarely make it to the mainstream headlines. For the first time, I could work without the pressures of deadlines and editors telling me what they wanted and I was able to deliver another narrative that went beyond my own paradigm of values. It also made me see the importance of giving a voice to those who so often go unrecognized rather just reporting the daily "events.” The Alexia Foundation will begin accepting applications for its 2017 Professional and Student Grants on Jan. 2, 2017. @natgeo @natgeocreative @thephotosociety @nikonusa @everydayafrica #guineabissau #africa #photooftheday #photography #topshot #nikonusa #nikonlove #nikonnofilter #nikonambassador #documentary #photojournalism #alexiafoundation #amivitalePhoto by @amivitale.
