Workers pluck and then weigh tea in St. Clair’s Tea Estate in front of the St. Clair's Falls, the "Little Niagara of Sri Lanka.” It is situated 3 km west of the town of Talawakele on the Hatton-Talawakele Highway in Nuwara Eliya District. Tea production is one of the main sources of foreign exchange for Sri Lanka and contributes $700 million annually to the economy. However, poverty levels on plantations have consistently been higher than the national average. I worked over the course of two years for National Geographic covering the political upheaval and aftermath of the thirty-year war in Sri Lanka.
